El Vato Rat fue creado por el artista Craig Stecyk. Proveniente de la escena de surf-skate "Z-Boy" de Santa Mónica Dogtown de la década de 1970, Stecyk estaba rodeado por la cultura de las pandillas hispanas y el grafiti. En ese momento, estaba retocando muchas tablas de surf Zephyr y mezcló esa influencia en su trabajo. El Vato Rat fue uno de los muchos símbolos que usó para decorar las tablas de surf y, en general, marcar el territorio en los lugares de surf locales. En 1983, Stacy Peralta decidió recuperar el Vato Rat como un gráfico de Powell-Peralta. Lo llamaron "Rat Bones" y se utilizó en publicidad, en barajas, pegatinas y camisetas.
